How to edit an existing PowerPoint deck with AI
Audit a deck, fix only the slides that need it, and keep fonts, colors and notes intact. Prompts, a real before-and-after, and checks before you send.

To fix an existing deck with AI without breaking it, ask the agent to audit the deck first, then change only the slides you name, then check the result as slides. In Nebula Writer the agent edits the .pptx file itself: shapes, text, speaker notes, tables and charts. It reuses the fonts, colors and layouts already in the deck rather than applying its own.
A real before and after
On October 3, 2026 we gave the agent a two-slide sample deck we built for testing. On slide 1, the body text "Clear ownership keeps delivery predictable." sat on top of the headline "Ship fewer changes, finish them well". This was the prompt:
Prompt
Review the saved appearance of layout-review.pptx and fix the overlapping
text. Keep all wording, fonts, colors, and text-box sizes unchanged, and
preserve the rest of the deck. Check the saved result before telling me it
is ready. Leave the archive copy alone.
The agent moved the body text box 1.30 inches down, clear of the headline. The box kept its size, text, fonts and colors, and slide 2 was not touched. It then rendered the saved slide and looked at it to confirm the fix. (The archive copy was a second file in the sample folder; it stayed exactly as it was.)
The method below scales that up to a real deck.
1. Keep a way back
Every agent edit can be discarded, but for a deck that has already been approved it is worth a second safety net. Before you start, open History and choose Save a restore point. If you want the original kept as a separate file, use File, Save As… to save a copy, and make sure the copy is the file you edit.
2. Ask for an audit first
An audit separates finding problems from fixing them, so you can check the agent's reading of the deck before anything changes.
Prompt
Check slides 3 to 8 of @presentations/launch-review.pptx for shapes outside
the slide, overlapping text, text smaller than the rest of the deck, crowded
slides, and pictures without alt text. Report findings by slide number. Do
not edit the deck yet.
You should see findings by slide in the agent pane and no review bar.
Know what the audit covers. The built-in checks look at shape positions, overlapping text boxes, font sizes, text that PowerPoint has shrunk to fit, text density and alt text. They work from the file's structure and do not render the slides, so "no findings" does not prove that nothing overflows. If LibreOffice is installed, the agent can also render slides as images and look at them; add "look at the rendered slides" to the prompt.
3. Change only the slides you name
Once you agree with the findings, ask for a scoped fix and say what must not change:
Prompt
Fix the overlap on slide 4. On slide 6, move the long paragraph into the
speaker notes and leave a one-line summary on the slide. Keep all other
wording, fonts, colors and text-box sizes. Leave every other slide unchanged.
You should see a Review agent edit bar, for example "PowerPoint · 3 changes". Inspect changes lists each change with its Before and After. PowerPoint edits are kept or discarded as one decision, so if one change is wrong, choose Discard edit and ask again with a narrower request rather than keeping a partly wrong edit.
4. Check it as slides
| Check | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Scope | Slides outside the request look exactly as before |
| Layout | Text fits, nothing sits off the slide, nothing covers anything else |
| Facts | Numbers, labels and dates match their source |
| Notes | Speaker notes keep the detail that moved off the slide |
| Story | The titles still read in order as one argument |
Scan the thumbnails as well as the current slide; drift in title position and density shows up quickly there. Press Shift+F5 to present from the current slide and see it full screen.
Before you send the deck, open it in PowerPoint or the app your audience will use and check fonts, media, animations and transitions. Nebula Writer draws slides with its own renderer, and uncommon fonts or embedded media can look different elsewhere. PDF export waits until there are no edits left to review.
Follow-ups that stay small
- "Rewrite only the slide titles on slides 2 to 7 so they read as a six-line summary."
- "Make the titles on slides 3 to 8 the same size as the title on slide 2."
- "Update the chart on slide 5 with the Q3 numbers from @data/q3.xlsx. Keep its colors and position."
- "Add alt text to every picture that lacks it."
If a result is partly wrong, discard it and narrow the request. For more on review, see how to check every AI edit and the review and history guide.
