Nebula Writer vs. Claude: reviewing AI edits to Office files

Claude for Word can put every AI edit in as a tracked change. Nebula Writer gives you one keep-or-discard decision per edit, with a restore point behind it. When each suits the work.

If you want to accept or reject an AI's edits to a Word document one at a time, use Claude for Word. In its tracked changes mode, "every edit lands as a revision you can accept or reject in Word's native review pane." Nebula Writer can't do that for Word, Excel or PowerPoint files. You can look at each change, but you keep or discard the edit as a whole.

Where Claude can edit your files

In a chat, on any plan, Claude creates Word, Excel, PowerPoint and PDF files by writing and running code in a sandbox, with a 30 MB limit per file, and hands the finished file back as a download.

On paid plans it also works inside Microsoft's apps. Claude for Word edits a selection while keeping its styles and numbering, works through comment threads, and has the tracked changes mode. Claude for Excel updates values while keeping formulas intact, and Claude for PowerPoint builds slides from your deck's slide master and adds native charts. One conversation can carry across Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. Separately, Claude Cowork can work on a folder you connect through the Claude desktop app and save finished work back to it.

Tracked changes in Claude for Word

Tracked changes are the review model lawyers and editors already use, and Claude for Word drops its edits straight into it. Each change is marked in the document with its author and waits for its own decision. If you're going through a contract or a manuscript where someone has to sign off on every word, that's hard to beat, and you never leave Word.

Keep or discard in Nebula Writer

Nebula Writer is a desktop app with its own editors for .docx, .xlsx and .pptx files, and an AI agent that edits the files in a folder. Before the agent writes anything, the app saves a restore point. The edit then waits in a review bar above the document. Inspect changes walks you through each change with its before and after text. Keep keeps all of it, and Discard puts the file back exactly as it was.

This works best for edits whose parts only make sense together: renumbering tables after a late insert, retitling a chart and the slide that cites it, or moving one text box so it clears another. On a sample deck we built for testing, slide 1 had body text sitting on top of the headline. We asked the agent to fix the overlap without changing any wording, fonts, colors or box sizes. It moved the body text box 1.30 inches down, rendered the saved slide to check the result, and left slide 2 alone. That came back as a single edit to keep or discard, with nothing to pick apart.

When part of an edit is wrong, discard it and ask again with tighter limits, such as "only section 3" or "leave the figures alone." In Markdown, LaTeX and plain text, the review bar can also offer Keep and Discard for single changes, though most agent edits are one decision there too.

Other things that differ

Claude is a general assistant for drafting, research and analysis, on the web, the desktop and your phone. Nebula Writer is built for editing the files in a project, and that's most of what it does.

Claude's Office add-ins run in Microsoft's apps, which define their own formats and support co-authoring. Nebula Writer needs no Microsoft apps. Its editors lay out pages their own way, so a complex layout can look slightly different there, and it has no live co-editing.

A Nebula Writer project can mix formats. Type @ to point the agent at a Word file, a workbook and a LaTeX source in the same folder, and ask for one change across them. More examples are in what the agent can do in each format.

On price, as of October 2026, Claude Pro is $20 a month, or $200 a year, and Max is $100 or $200 a month for 5 or 20 times Pro's usage. The Office add-ins need one of those paid plans. Nebula Writer's free plan includes the agent with a monthly AI allowance. Pro is $25 a month for more AI, and Ultra is $100 a month for four times the Pro allowance.

Before you choose

Nebula Writer runs on Apple silicon Macs, Windows and Linux, and you sign in with a Google account. The agent runs in the cloud, so your request and the parts of your documents it needs go to our servers and our AI provider, and the files stay in your folder.

If your documents live in Microsoft 365 and every word needs a reviewer's sign-off, Claude for Word fits that workflow. If you don't have Microsoft's apps, or your requests span several kinds of file, download Nebula Writer and try it on a copy of a real project.

Questions

Can Claude edit a Word document directly?

Yes. Claude for Word is an add-in that edits the open document inside Microsoft Word, and its tracked changes mode lets you accept or reject each edit. In a chat, Claude can also create a Word file and hand it back as a download.

Does Claude for Word need Microsoft 365?

Claude's documentation lists Word on the web, Word on Windows with a Microsoft 365 subscription, and Word on Mac version 16.61 or later. It doesn't run on Word 2016 or 2019 perpetual licenses, on iPad or on Android.

Is Claude for Word free?

No. The Word, Excel and PowerPoint add-ins need a paid Claude plan: Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise. On the Free plan, Claude can still create Office files in a chat.
