Word documents

Open a .docx file from the project tree to edit the original Word-compatible document in Nebula Writer's paginated workspace.

A formatted DOCX open in Nebula Writer with pages, toolbar, ruler, project files, and the agent

Edit the document#

The DOCX editor is a native WYSIWYG surface. It supports common document work including:

  • Paragraph and character styles
  • Font family, size, weight, color, and alignment
  • Lists, spacing, indentation, and rulers
  • Tables and images
  • Headers, footers, page sizes, and page layout
  • Find, replace, undo, and redo

Use Cmd/Ctrl + S to save. Save As is useful before a broad restructure or when you need a separate deliverable. If another application changes the file, use the reload flow and decide which state should win before continuing.

Keep formatting stable#

Word documents can contain layout features that are easy to disturb even when the text change is small. Before a high-risk edit:

  1. Save the source document.
  2. Create a copy when the original must remain untouched.
  3. Work in a narrow section or table.
  4. Inspect the affected pages at a readable zoom.
  5. Reopen the saved file to confirm it round-trips correctly.

Check headers, footers, page breaks, table widths, anchored images, and the first page after any style change.

Ask the agent to edit a DOCX#

Name the scope and the formatting that must survive:

Prompt
In the Executive Summary, replace the opening two paragraphs with a concise decision statement. Preserve the existing heading style, margins, header, and all tables. Do not change any number elsewhere in the document.

For a document-wide audit, ask for findings before edits:

Prompt
Audit this document for inconsistent heading styles, broken table widths, and repeated recommendations. List the page and section for each issue. Do not edit yet.

After the agent works, read its response and inspect the rendered pages. An operation summary cannot tell you whether text now wraps onto an extra page or an image moved.

Review agent changes#

DOCX agent operations can update a backed-up working file while the review session is open. Accept All keeps the edited result; Discard All restores the original backup for that review session.

Use a narrow follow-up rather than accepting a partly correct broad rewrite:

Prompt
Discard the previous change. Edit only the second paragraph under Findings, keep its current style, and leave the table below it untouched.

Use Review changes & recover when you need action history or a saved document version.

Comments and revisions#

Nebula Writer can preserve and surface supported comment and tracked-revision content in DOCX files, and the agent can work with document structure. It is not a complete replacement for Microsoft Word's manual Review sidebar and every specialized review feature.

For contracts, regulated review, or a workflow that depends on complex tracked changes, reopen the final file in Microsoft Word and verify comments, revisions, fields, and layout before handoff.

Export to PDF#

DOCX supports native PDF export in Nebula Writer. Export after saving the document, then inspect the PDF for:

  • Page count and page breaks
  • Font substitution
  • Headers and footers
  • Table and image clipping
  • Links and special fields

PDF export creates a delivery copy; it does not turn the source editor into a PDF editor.

Compatibility checklist#

Verify the file in Word before external delivery when it relies on macros, unusual fields, legacy objects, advanced drawing shapes, complex section behavior, or strict template compliance. Keep the DOCX as the editable source and the reviewed PDF as a stable reference when the recipient needs layout fidelity.
